Crumlin RFC 13-35 Trinant RFC

Trinant travelled to local rivals Crumlin for their 1st round SWALEC bowl cup game. Trinant started well taking play to the home 22, from the line out a good catch and drive taken on by prop Craig Maddock resulted in penalty to the visitors. A quick tap by scrum half Dean Pitt only for him to miss judge the field markings and cross the dead ball line. Both clubs swapped penalties to level at 3pts all on 20 minutes. A lot of errors and penalties resulted a period of scrappy play, a penalty to the troggs for dissent took play to the home 22. A drive by flanker Alex Jones to Pitt to score converted by Jamie Lyons 10pts -3 on 25 minutes, Trinant continued to press and were on top at scrum, maul and line out. From a scrum in the home 22, no8 Phil Leonard picked up off loaded to Pitt for try number two converted by Lyons 17pts-3 on 35 minutes. Although under pressure, Crumlin came back to score a good try on half time 17pts-8. In the second half Crumlin penned Trinant in their on 22 following ill discipline which resulted in two yellow cards inside 10 minutes for backchat. With the Troggs down to 13 men Crumlin added a further try in the corner to close the gap to 17pts -13 on 55 minutes. However, once back to full strength the visitors resumed control and dominated the final 20 minutes. It was the home teams turn to pick up yellow cards. Lyons added penalties in 65 and 70th minutes to increase the to 23 pts-13. On 72 minutes Trinant increased their lead from a pushover scrum 15 metres from the Crumlin line, scored by no8 Leonard. Two more yellow cards came for the Troggs after that. Just before the final whistle, following a scrum, Leonard picked up to put full back Dwaine Smith in space to score under the posts, converted by Lyons 35pts-13. In a game littered with yellow cards and one red and numerous cheaply given away penalties, it was clean game with not a punch thrown. Trinants man of the match was flanker Alex Jones who put in the hard yards and tackles.
